Look Your Best At The Fest - Summer Festival Hair Guide

And so the final part of The Tiny Atelier Summer Festival Guide.

While I'm sure you'll get to the fest with super clean, shiny, soft hair it's doubtful that even after one day of rain, sun, mud, dancing and running to and from tents it'll still look that way.

The first defense in solving these hair dramas should be a can of dry shampoo. Bumble & Bumble hair powder has always been hailed as one of the best - available in a range of colours to match your hair.

If you need a cheaper option opt for Batiste dry shampoo. You can now buy their product in blond through brunette shades but if you opt for a fragranced version you won't need to pack body spray or perfume - my personal favourite is Tropical, with its summery coconut scent:

TIP: Spray dry shampoo on to roots and throughout the hair before going to bed. The pillow will rub off any excess white powder meaning you won't have the appearance of grey hair in the morning!
------------------------------
Hair 'up' is likely to be your best option for a long weekend where there's no chance of washing it on day two. Execute the style before you go to save packing tools - though do pop an extra few kirby grips, hair fasteners and mini can of hairspray into your bag (TTA recommends L'oreal Elnett Flexible):

The top knot is a great style for a festival - it gets all of your hair up and away from your face and is one of few hair dos that actually looks good when its messy. Up keep is super easy...if a few stands pop out just push them into the nearest kirby grip. To create this style simply sweep hair up into a high ponytail, coil the hair around the base of the pony, secure with kirby grips, spray with hairspray!

A side braid is a great option if you have the length. Click here to watch a video on how to create an Alexander Wang style plait.

If you have longer hair why not try this style the day before to leave you with soft waves?

------------------------------
Hair accessories are also key for festival hair. Not only can you use them to compliment your outfit but they can hide and detract from a multitude of hair sins..

Try a turban to hide dirty roots and to keep a wayward fringe under control - ASOS, £8

Go OTT with this flower headband from River Island, £15

Pull hair into a low or half ponytail then simply clip these gingham bow accessories across your crown - Topshop, £6

If you're glamping rather than camping, why not opt for a handmade feather headband by Pearl & Ivy, £25
------------------------------
If all else fails, pop a straw hat on and forget it about....just choose from '70s wide brim floppy hat, trilby or bowler

ASOS £20

Brixton £45

Look Your Best At The Fest - Summer Festival Nail Guide

If you're only wanting a slick of colour while you're slumming it in a field then skip the nudes and go for deep, dark shades or rainbow brights. Beige, caramel, mink...they all look tatty when they get chipped (and however good the polish, they will get chipped) whereas as darker colours still look fine when a little scruffy.

For Gothic shades and jewel tones that are high gloss you can't beat Revlon. At £6.49, pick one polish for fingers and toes:
For summer neons pop to Barry M. At just £2.99 (and with Boots and Superdrug often running a 2 for £5 offer) you can afford to pick up a different shade for every nail:
------------------------------
There are two super simple ways to do nail art without any fuss that are quick and don't need a steady hand:

Barry M's Nail Effects is now available in Black, White Frost, Pink Fizz and Blue Print (£3.99 each) - just one coat over any nail polish leaves a cracked, animal print effect on you nails.

TIP: Once dry coat with clear polish as the Nail Effects formula drys matte and will easily chip.

Or go for high impact, low maintenance with Nail Rock Nail Wraps (£6.65) - simply trim your chosen wrap to fit, apply self adhesive side to the base of the nail then use a small hairdryer to heat strip and apply fully to the nail.
Blue, Yellow & Pink Stripes
Gingham Blue on White
Cheetah Yellow, Black & Fluorescent Orange

If you've got a few spare hours before your chosen Fest why not dabble in a little nail art. ASOS recently teamed up with nail artist Sophy Robson for a music inspired shoot:

Look Your Best At The Fest - Summer Festival Beauty Guide

Following on from The Tiny Atelier Summer Festival Fashion Guide here's a look at the beauty essentials that should make up any festival goers kit.

If you're wanting a pre-fest tan I'd highly recommend St Moritz spray (around £3 - available from TJHughes, Bodycare, Home Bargains and online here). I've tried multiple tanning products of varying price points with huge variants in success but St M has always delivered an even tan and is super easy to apply due to the product going on coloured (so you'll be well aware if you've missed a spot). It also comes in a mousse formula which is just as good but the spray leaves you with a more natural glow that will easily last for a long weekend.

TIP: For application I'd recommend standing in the bath or shower and DEFINITELY use a mitt!
------------------------------
For the festival itself you need a collection of products that are both multi-functional and easy to apply. I think we can safely assume that any 3 step cleansing routine is out the window so for whipping off make up and dirt at the end of a long day go for face wipes to do the job in double quick time. ROC cleansing wipes are pricier than most, at £6, but thoroughly clean off even waterproof make up, are alcohol free so leave your skin feeling moisturised and the textured wipe acts as a light exfoliator. I have sensitive skin and have never had any sort of reaction or flair up with ROC.
TIP: Keep your eyes peeled for the Boots free with purchase £5 off vouchers now and stock up before the festi-season really kicks in!
------------------------------
Another fantastic all-rounder of a product is Elizabeth Arden's Eight Hour Cream. Again it's more expensive than say Vaseline (£25 from Boots) but you definitely get your money's worth (I've had mine about 6 years and it's still going strong). Use as a lip balm, moisturiser, sunburn soother and to tame flyaway hairs. I've got friend's addicted to this after letting them try mine as it's results are amazing.

------------------------------
Obviously you'll have packed your SPF of choice but using a heavy body sun protectant on your face can lead to blocked pores and break outs. Instead, go for a product tailored for facial skin but with a slight tint meaning you can skip on base...

Clinique's City Block is SPF20 and also acts as a make-up primer, leaving a light trace of colour. This is the BEST sun block I have ever used and for someone who wears foundation all the time it's a pretty big thumbs up that I've never felt I needed to after using it. You can also buy this product in a SPF 40 (Super City Block) both for £15.50.
------------------------------
So, even with your bronzed skin you may still want to rosy glow on your cheeks. Clearly you can't be packing your MAC brushes so try a gel blusher which can also double as a lip tint...

Topshop's Lip & Cheek Tint in Bitten Berry (£7) is a translucent cherry red gel formula which doesn't feel drying and is fool proof to apply. A little goes a long way, so use sparingly.

TIP: Make sure you've got a face wipe ready to clean your fingers - remember this is a stain!
------------------------------
Unless you've found your holy grail mascara already (it's taken me at least a decade) try Boots 17 Wild Curls Mascara (£6.29)...
Available in Wildest Black, Black & Brown I'd plump for Waterproof Black (the non waterproof versions have a tendency to smudge throughout the day) for a non clumpy slick of colour that won't budge.
------------------------------
With limited make-up application time and lack of a full length mirror and tools, skip the eyeliner. But if you still want a little colour on your lids go for easy to apply neutrals...
Urban Decay's Half Baked (£13) is a great nude with a hint of shimmer. The 'subway token' packaging is also nice and sturdy so there's little chance it'll shatter at the bottom of your bag.
------------------------------
For a little touch of glamour, why not take tips from Lily Allen who goes all out on the eyes when it comes to her Festival performances...

Topshop Crayon in Zephyr £8.50
Boots 17 Glitter Eye Shadow in Gold Digger £3.89

Barry M Glitter Eye Crayon in Silver £4.59

Barry M Super Soft Eye Crayon in Matt Blue £3.99

Bourjois Little Round Pot Eyeshadow in Argent Pailette £6 (online at ASOS)

Look Your Best At The Fest - Summer Festival Fashion Guide

Whether you're a V-Fest virgin or a Download devotee you're sure to know the importance of a festival wardrobe - you need to pack light but still be festi-fabulous.

Like any good wardrobe, start with the basics - vests and leggings for layering, a kick-ass pair of shorts and a light weight jacket:

Topshop Boutique Cashmere Vest
£22
TFNC Parka
£27

H&M Denim Shorts
£14.99

Oasis Jersey Leggings
£15

From here you can add a few key pieces to make you stand out from the crowds. Why not take inspiration from these fest aficionados who nail their looks at Glasto, Isle of Wight and Coachella every year...

Keep an eclectic outfit like Eliza Dolittle's still looking styled to perfection by sticking to just a couple of colours from the same palette:

Headdress - Bitching & Junkfood. Tie Front Tank - Topshop. Print Shirt - Rokit Recycled.

For a hippy look take note from the Queen of Ethereal - Florence Welch

Dress - Love. Knee Highs - Miss Selfridge. Ankle Boots - Topshop.

For an easy, laid back look take styling tips from Coachella fan Diane Kruger

Fedora - Country Attire. Tie Side Tank - Topshop. Maxi Skirt - River Island.
------------------------------
Now you've picked your festival attire you need to style them up with a select few high impact pieces to make sure that you're style snapper ready:

Go for clip on earrings like these from Treasure Box (£31.50) made with wood, shell and howlite.

Or try a feathered ear cuff from Regal Rose (£15).
We all know American Apparel likes a multi-functional garment and their sheer jersey scarves (£36 for 3 - shown here in teal, heather grey & light pink) are no different - try as a turban to cover final day hair.

A pouch bag with a long strap will be a summer festival staple - large enough to hold all your daily essentials with the added benefit of being able to wear it across body while bopping to your favourite bands (Urban Outfitters - £38).
 ♥
For shades the shape of the season is circular - splurge with Ray Ban's 3447 style (£108 - available from Sunglasses Shop)...
...or snap up these Cheap Monday copies (via ASOS) for just £18!

The resurgance of the 90s flatform shows no signs of fading but for festival season skip sandals and head straight for a chunky plimsoll - guarenteed to make the walk through the mud to the tents easier while working with any outfit. Try Vans Authentics at Office from £30.
------------------------------
Finish any outfit off with a pre-requisite festival wristband, plenty of sunscreen and a big smile!
