One Trick Pony

At the A/W 2011 shows the humble ponytail was the updo of choice, showcased on the heads of models walking for everyone from Marc Jacobs to Alexander Wang.

Compared to this season's disco decadence, this look is more about the relaxed vibe of the sixties with usually high octane designers such as Versace and Cavalli showcasing this effortless chic.

Top tips? Follow Wang's lead (remember how everyone who had the length had a fishtail plait after they where shown at his show in S/S 10) and keep the pony low and loose for mussed-up texture.

Going for a high ponytail for a more formal, pulled together look? Keep it in the centre of the head and no higher than the brow bone to avoid the 'My Little Pony' look - unless you're going for an S&M twist as seen at LV.

Finally - no exposed hairbands. Use a strip of fabric or piece of hair around to keep it covered.

For a finishing touch play with the texture - Gucci crimped the pony's ends and adorned it with feathers!
